TASTE, Brazilian Style Gourmet

Cuisine: Brazilian
Are you in the mood for good Brazilian food? How would I know, I’m not Brazilian nor have I ever been to Brazil.
What I do is ingest other cultures by eating their food. So you can take this review with a grain of salt, but it’s far more honest and informed than anything you’ll read on Yelp.

This quaint little Brazilian eatery is nestled in an unassuming section of a strip mall in Huntington Beach, CA. There is a bar across the parking lot and a nail salon next door.
Some may call it a hole in the wall, and well, it is … though I’ve found that unassuming holes in the wall provide the most authentic culinary experience outside of any country.
The first clue that the place is authentic is that its patrons speak Portuguese. The staff also speak in Portuguese and are very friendly. The owner, Rafael, sat down with my family and had a nice chat with us. It has a homely feel to it … away from the pretentious crowd one can expect at the overpriced and under-delivering but super trendy ethnic eateries at the big malls like South Coast Plaza.

So what’s on the menu? First of all, the picanha plate is awesome. Strips of sirloin prepared Brazilian style, a salad, rice, and a bowl of fejoada. It’s a great value for the price. The meat is tender and tasty. The fejoada, black beans with a smidge of linguica is just amazing. I don’t know why I like it, but I do. It’s a different take on the typical beans one can expect in the US, usually either beans in chili, or refried in the Mexican tradition. It is so much better, with a simple yet subtly complex aroma and flavor. In addition, they have various pastries, pao de quejo being in the forefront. This is a Brazilian cheese bread and is a great starter to wake the taste buds.

This is the only legit Brazilian homestyle eatery in OC as far as I know. I am always on the lookout for more. The other options are the Churrascaria establishments that will set you back at least $35 a person. I’ll talk about those another time.

Simply delicious in Costa Mesa

Cuisine: French   In a little strip mall off Bristol and Jamboree is this fine example of good food done right in a casual setting. I’ve never been to France, I don’t know how the food is there, but spend five minutes here and one can begin to feel as …
